Reigning world champion D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi share the second spot along with compatriot R Praggnanandhaa and nine others while fellow Indian Grandmaster R Vaishali remains in joint-lead in the women’s section along with Kateryna Lagno.

Reigning world champion D Gukesh and Arjun Erigiasi played out a stalemate in a highly-anticipated all-Indian battle in the fourth round of the FIDE Grand Swiss in Samarkand on Sunday. Fellow Indian Grandmaster R Vaishali, meanwhile, remained in joint lead in the ‘Women’ section after playing out a draw against Germany’s Dinara Wagner.

Gukesh, Arjun shake hands at the end of an eventful encounter

The spotlight, however, was on the highly-anticipated battle between Arjun and Gukesh, ranked fifth and sixth respectively in the FIDE Classical ratings, with the former playing with black pieces.

The game developed from a Catalan opening and saw pawn exchanges take place from the 10th move, with both players losing a bishop and a knight each by Move 14. And by the 21st move, both sets of rooks were off the board. The two Indian stars later opted for a Queen exchange, and slowed the pace of the game down after being left with a knight each on the board along with pawns.

They eventually shook hands after agreeing to a stalemate via repetition.

Iranian GM Parham Maghsoodloo is the sole leader in the ‘Open’ section currently with 3.5 points out of a possible 4, having been held to a draw by home favourite Nodirbek Abdusattorov after collecting a win in each of the three previous rounds.

Gukesh, Arjun and Pragg, meanwhile, share the second spot with nine others including Nodirbek and Abhimanyu.

As for the women’s section, Vaishali remains in joint lead with Russian GM Kateryna Lagno after a 31-move draw against Wagner while playing as black. Senior GM Harika Dronavalli is joint-fourth after playing out four consecutive draws while International Master Vantika Agrawal has fallen behind after suffering two consecutive defeats.
