Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday attacked Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, saying he continues to violate the Constitution and human rights of people.

The members of the Awami League organised a protest at the Broken Chair in Geneva during the ongoing 60th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, to highlight alleged human rights violations in Bangladesh under the interim government, ANI reported.

During the protest, Hasina addressed the gathering via a phone call. “Since coming to power, Yunus-led government has continued to violate the constitution and human rights,” she said.

At the demonstration, the protesters accused the government of involvement in killings, rapes, enforced disappearances, arson, and registration of false cases.

ANI reported them raising slogans like “Terrorist Terrorist, Yunus” and “Step Down Yunus”. Protestors were also seen holding placards of Yunnus, written, “Killer Yunnus”, “World should boycott Muhammad Yunus”.

While raising slogans in support of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founding father, they demanded the revocation of his Nobel Peace Prize that he had received in 2006 along with Grameen Bank for their work in microcredit. He was the first Nobel Peace Prize recipient in Bangladesh.

This comes after a seminar held during the 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva highlighted the deteriorating human rights conditions in Bangladesh.

Protests were witnessed on Friday outside the United Nations headquarters in New York, where members of the Bangladeshi diaspora shouted slogans and displayed banners against Muhammad Yunus. They alleged a sharp increase in atrocities against minorities in the country ever since the Yunus government took over.

In May, the interim government banned all activities of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League, which was ousted last year following a student-led uprising. The general elections in Bangladesh are scheduled for February next year.
