Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has said his country will move forward hand in hand with China to advance their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

In a video message on the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh-China ties, Yunus said closeness between Dhaka and Beijing will “bring peace, prosperity and happiness to the people of both countries and the world”.

According to Bangladesh media, the Chinese embassy in Dhaka hosted a grand reception at a hotel on Wednesday (September 17) to mark the 76th founding anniversary of the People’s Republic of China and the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh-China diplomatic ties.

Calling China “Bangladesh’s closest friend and most reliable partner”, Yunus expressed gratitude for Beijing’s long-standing trust, assistance, and support to Dhaka. He reportedly spoke highly of the Asian giant’s achievements under the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from economic development and technological innovation to poverty alleviation and social welfare.

In his address at the event, Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen said 2025 marks not only the 76th founding anniversary of the People’s Republic of China but also the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.

“Under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese people have achieved the miracle of eliminating absolute poverty. China will always remain a force for peace, stability, and progress in the world,” Yao was quoted by Bangladeshi news portal, BSS News.

He said Bangladesh and China have always been “good neighbours, sincere friends, and reliable partners”. “China stands ready to continue supporting Bangladesh in its modernization journey and to write a new chapter in building a China-Bangladesh community with a shared future,” he was quoted.

Yunus had visited China in March and held a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping about business opportunities between the two countries. China, which is Bangladesh’s fourth-largest lender with $7.5 billion in loans, was also asked to support various development projects.

During his visit, he had also made controversial statements against India. While inviting China to Bangladesh, he had said: “Seven states of India in the east is a landlocked country…landlocked region of India. They have no way to open up to the ocean. Bangladesh is the only guardian of the ocean. This opens a huge possibility…can be a huge extension for the Chinese economy…build things…produce things…market things.”
