Trump’s comments came days after he said that a breakthrough on Gaza was imminent, and claimed that negotiators were close to finalising an agreement that would secure the release of hostages and bring an end to the war.

“It’s looking like we have a deal on Gaza… I think it’s a deal that will get the hostages back. It’s going to be a deal that will end the war… It’s going to be peace,” Trump had said amid renewed international focus on the ongoing conflict.

The US President is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday at the White House with the aim of reaching a framework for a deal, according to administration officials.

Trump’s 21-Point Peace Plan

Meanwhile, Trump has proposed a 21-point peace plan for the Middle East and Gaza. According to Western media outlets, the proposal calls for an immediate halt to all military operations in Gaza as the first step toward ending the war.

The Washington Post said it obtained a copy of the plan, verified by officials from two governments familiar with the discussions. It said that if both sides agree, existing “battle lines” would be frozen, with 20 living hostages and the remains of more than two dozen others set to be released within 48 hours.

Al-Arabiya said that the plan will be presented to Netanyahu when the latter travels to the White House.

The war has raged for nearly two years and pushed Israeli forces deep into Gaza City, described by Israel as the “last stronghold of Hamas.” The conflic has exacted a staggering tcivilian toll. Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reported the total number of people killed since October 7, 2023, has reached 65,502.
