A horrifying act of violence shook Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, on Sunday, September 28, when a man crashed his vehicle through the doors of a Mormon church and opened fire on worshippers. The suspect, identified by police as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, was killed in an exchange of gunfire with officers, but not before leaving a trail of devastation. At least four people lost their lives and eight others were injured in the attack, which has stunned the local community and the wider United States.

Authorities confirmed that Sanford, a resident of nearby Burton, had a decorated career as a US Marine. Known to some as “Jake,” he graduated from a local high school in 2004 and served in the Marines from 2004 to 2008.

According to a US Marine Corps spokesperson, Sanford held roles as an organisational automotive mechanic and a vehicle recovery operator. Rising to the rank of sergeant, he earned multiple commendations during his service, including the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the National Defence Service Medal.

Sanford was deployed to Iraq between 2007 and 2008, with his last posting at the 2nd Maintenance Battalion of Combat Logistics Regiment 25 at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Despite his military accomplishments, police have yet to identify a motive for the brutal attack, which included an attempt to set fire to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel while hundreds of worshippers were gathered inside.

What do we know about the attack?

Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye described the sequence of events in a press briefing. Officers responded to a 911 call within 30 seconds of the first report and confronted the suspect about eight minutes later. After leaving the church, Sanford exchanged gunfire with two officers, who ultimately shot and killed him. Police say the quick response likely prevented an even greater tragedy.

Witnesses recounted moments of sheer terror. Nearby resident Brad Schneemann told the Associated Press that he and his daughter heard “two rounds of four to five shots” around 10.30 a.m. before a sudden silence. Inside the church, congregants scrambled for safety as flames and gunfire erupted.

What friends and family said about the attacker?

Those who knew Sanford expressed disbelief at the violent turn of events. Ryan Lopez, a former high school classmate, said he often saw Sanford around town and found nothing unusual about his behaviour. “He was happy to see me, he just seemed normal,” Lopez told The New York Times, adding that Sanford was an avid hunter of geese, turkey and deer and appeared to be a typical “country kid” during their school days.

Court records show that Sanford married his high school sweetheart in 2016 and the couple have a 10-year-old son. As of now, his family has not issued any public statement.

US mass shootings continue

The Michigan church shooting was the second mass attack in the United States in less than 24 hours. On Saturday night, a man opened fire from a boat in Southport, North Carolina, killing three people and injuring five others.

President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the Michigan tragedy and praised the swift response of law enforcement. “PRAY for the victims, and their families. THIS EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE IN OUR COUNTRY MUST END, IMMEDIATELY!” he wrote on social media.
