US President Donald Trump has made several diplomatic efforts in recent months to broker a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Despite these efforts, Trump has now expressed skepticism about Ukraine’s ability to prevail in the ongoing conflict without taking offensive action against Russia.

In the past week, Trump held separate meetings with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, aiming to facilitate negotiations that could lead to a resolution of the war. However, throughout the peace initiative, Trump has consistently criticised former President Joe Biden, whom he blames for the current situation between the two nations.

On Thursday, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to share his views on the ongoing war. He directly criticised Biden for his approach to Ukraine’s defence, suggesting that the former president limited Kyiv’s ability to counterattack Russian forces. Trump posted, “It is very hard, if not impossible, to win a war without attacking an invader’s country. It’s like a great team in sports that has a fantastic defense, but is not allowed to play offense. There is no chance of winning!”

Labelling Biden as “crooked” and “grossly incompetent,” Trump accused his predecessor of permitting Ukraine only to defend itself, rather than supporting offensive military action. He reiterated a claim he has made repeatedly that the war between Russia and Ukraine would never have occurred if he had been president in 2022.

In a symbolic gesture, Trump later shared an image of himself poking Vladimir Putin in the chest, a photo that appeared to mirror the historic moment when President Richard Nixon poked Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev during their 1959 meeting.

Last week’s diplomatic engagements included a meeting with Putin in Alaska, followed by a multilateral summit at the White House involving Zelenskyy and several European Union leaders. According to EU sources, Putin has agreed in principle to meet with Zelenskyy. However, there has been no official confirmation from the Kremlin regarding any such meeting or timeline.
