Donald Trump on Wednesday hailed the special relationship between the United States and Britain as he paid a gushing tribute to King Charles during his historic second state visit, calling it one of the “highest honours of his life”.

“This is one of the highest honour in my life, His Majesty the King has epitomised the fortitude, nobility and the spirit of British Monarchy and the British people,” Trump said in Windsor, United Kingdom.

Trump and his wife, Melania, were treated to the full array of British pageantry. “The bond of kinship and identity between America and the United Kingdom is priceless and eternal. It’s irreplaceable and unbreakable,” Trump said in a speech during a lavish banquet at Windsor Castle, family home to British monarchs for almost 1,000 years.

Trump’s speech at the banquet followed one from the King, who referenced trade, Ukraine, and environmentalism. The monarch said the UK and US “fought together to defeat the forces of tyranny” during the First and Second World War, and added, “Today, as tyranny once again threatens Europe, we and our allies stand together in support of Ukraine to deter aggression and secure peace.”

Trump arrived in London on late Tuesday and said he loved being back in the United Kingdom, calling it a “very special place”. When asked if he had a message for Charles, he said the king was a longtime friend of his and well-respected.
