Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani on Tuesday said that his country will not tolerate any infringement on its sovereignty, and that it reserves the right to respond to the blatant attack by Israel targeting Hamas officials there.

Al-Thani said US officials first warned Qatar of the Israeli attack 10 minutes after it began, describing the strike as “100 per cent treacherous.”

“Qatar reserves the right to respond to this blatant attack and will take all necessary measures to respond,” he said, adding that a legal team had been formed to handle the Gulf country’s response to the attack.

Abdulrahman al-Thani also said that mediation efforts by Qatar between Israel and Hamas are part of the Qatari identity and nothing would deter its role in that regard.

“Qatar has spared no efforts and will do everything it can to stop this war in Gaza, but for the current talks, I do not think there’s something valid right now after what we saw from today’s attack,” he said at a news conference.

He also blamed Israel for sabotaging what he said were chances for peace, sharply slamming Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom he said practised “state terrorism”.

Israel struck a meeting of Hamas’ exiled political leadership in Qatar’s capital of Doha, sending plumes of smoke and debris rising over a city of air-conditioned World Cup stadiums and luxury malls typically shielded by US interceptor batteries.

Since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel ignited its war in Gaza, the Israeli military has targeted Hamas leaders far afield.

But while Tehran and Beirut were seen as fair game, Israel had refrained from striking Hamas’ political office in Qatar, the key mediator and US ally that Israeli leadership relied on as a back channel to the Palestinian militant group, according to the Associated Press.
