US President Donald Trump on Tuesday criticised several nations that have recently recognised Palestinian statehood, calling the move a “reward” for Hamas’ atrocities.

Speaking at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Trump said he had been actively involved in efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza.

“The negotiating parties have to get it done,” he said, urging a unified message from the international community: “release the hostages immediately.”

Trump condemned countries recognising Palestine in recent days, suggesting that such recognition incentivises “Hamas’ atrocities” rather than promoting peace.

The comments came after the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada announced on Sunday that they would officially recognise the “State of Palestine” in a joint statement aimed at reviving momentum for a two-state solution.

The move preceded the ongoing UNGA session, where nations such as France are also expected to announce formal recognition.

Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in a video statement, said Hamas would have “no role in the future of Palestine” and called for the “immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”

He added, “Today, to revive the hope of peace and a two-state solution, I state clearly – as prime minister of this great country – that the United Kingdom formally recognises the state of Palestine.”

The move drew criticism from Israel and the United States, which argue that recognising Palestine could empower extremists and reward Hamas, the group responsible for the October 7, 2023, attacks on southern Israel that sparked the ongoing conflict.
