Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday made a phone call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to share his assessment of his meeting with President Trump in Alaska on the Ukraine war.

While thanking President Putin, the Prime Minister underlined India’s consistent position for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through diplomacy and dialogue. He reiterated that India supports all efforts in this regard.

The two leaders also touched upon a number of issues of bilateral cooperation with a view to further strengthening the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia.

Putin met Trump for a three-hour talk in Alaska on Friday. However, the summit offered no breakthrough on a ceasefire in the conflict that has left tens of thousands dead and caused widespread destruction in Ukraine.

Trump is scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington along with several European leaders on Monday.

Trump has ruled out an immediate ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, saying a direct peace agreement would end the war.
