The fight for rights continues in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir with the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee announcing a siege of capital Muzaffarabad in the next 24 hours, sources told News18.

This comes a day after at least two persons were killed and several injured as Pakistani security forces opened fire on  protesters in Muzaffarabad. Protests were also reported in Dadyal and other areas of the region, which Pakistan has illegally occupied for decades.

According to sources, the committee has vowed to fight until their demands are fulfilled. It has announced a siege of the capital within the next 24 hours, the sources said.

The sources said all caravans will march towards Muzaffarabad on October 1. The decision came after the committee members consulted among themselves, they said.

On Monday (September 29), Pakistani security forces opened fire during a peace rally in Muzaffarabad, killing at least two persons. Police officials said the incident took place as hundreds of people marched along a main road in the regional capital.

The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee, a civil rights alliance, had called for a strike to demand subsidised food, electricity and other services. The committee wants the end of special allowances for government officials and the supply of electricity and wheat to the region at discounted rates, as compared to the rest of Pakistan.

These protests began two years ago to secure a regular and subsidised supply of flour and electricity in the region, but has now been joined by additional demands such as the reduction in privileges enjoyed by the Kashmiri elite, abolition of reserved assembly seats and free education and health facilities.

The government had deployed additional police and Rangers in Muzaffarabad and other districts to manage the situation, with nearly 3,000 Islamabad police personnel already stationed in the region, as per Pakistani media channels.
