Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday as both nations attempt to move past the strain in ties that followed violent clashes along the border in 2020. The visit is being seen as part of efforts to put the relationship back on track.

On Monday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar set the tone for the engagement, noting that “having seen a difficult period in our relationship… our two nations now seek to move ahead.”

He stressed that “the basis for any positive momentum in our ties is the ability to jointly maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas. It is also essential that the de-escalation process move forward,” pointing to the fact that disengagement and dismantling of military infrastructure at the Line of Actual Control remain incomplete ten months after Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping last met.
