Amid the violent anti-government protests in Nepal, a video of a hit-and-run incident in Lalitpur involving a vehicle carrying Koshi Province’s Finance and Planning Minister, Ram Bahadur Magar, has surfaced, which has angered netizens.

The incident, which has reignited debates over morality and accountability among public officials, saw netizens questioning the very humanity of those in positions of power.

The incident took place on September 7 at around 7:15 am near Harisiddhi Secondary School in Lalitpur Metropolitan City-28, Kathmandu Post reported.

As per the CCTV footage, a government vehicle carrying Magar struck an 11-year-old girl, identified as Usha Magar Sunuwar, as she attempted to cross the road. The vehicle reportedly continued without stopping, while a bystander assisted the girl.

Lalitpur Police confirmed that Magar was present in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Fortunately, the girl did not sustain serious injuries and was discharged from B&B Hospital after receiving treatment.

Public anger intensified after party chairperson and outgoing PM KP Sharma Oli described the incident as a “normal” occurrence, warning against politicising it. Many criticised the remark, arguing that it was inappropriate for the Prime Minister to dismiss the matter rather than hold the responsible leader accountable.

Meanwhile, amid the protests, a video surfaced on Tuesday in which Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel was chased on a road and thrashed by demonstrators.

In the video, over two dozen people were seen chasing while Paudel was running for his life. A man was seen kicking and others beating him up.

Nepal Crisis

Nepal is reeling under a serious political crisis after two days of anti-government protests saw attacks on private residences of several high-profile leaders, the headquarters of political parties and even the Parliament.

Nepal’s political landscape was thrown into unprecedented turmoil on Tuesday, as Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and President Ram Chandra Poudel resigned in the face of a furious and violent youth-led uprising.

The protests led by students appeared to reflect the growing public anger with the Oli dispensation over a range of issues, including a ban on social media and alleged inaction against corruption.

The unrest reached a boiling point with deadly clashes on September 8, when security forces’ response to the protests resulted in at least 19 fatalities. This sparked even greater outrage among demonstrators, predominantly from the digitally native “Gen Z” demographic.

Though the Nepal government on Monday night revoked its ban on social media, following what has been dubbed as ‘Gen Z’ protests in the neighbouring country, yet the anti-government demonstrations intensified on Tuesday, leading to arson and violence in many cases.
