Mexican TikTok influencer Esmeralda Ferrer Garibay and her family were discovered dead inside a pickup truck in the San Andres neighbourhood of Guadalajara on August. The bodies of 32-year-old Esmeralda, her 36-year-old husband Roberto Carlos Gil Licea, their 13-year-old son Gael Santiago, and their 7-year-old daughter Regina were found wrapped in plastic, authorities reported.
Prosecutor Alfonso Gutierrez Santillan indicated the murders are likely connected to cartel violence, according to The New York Post. CCTV footage obtained by the Latin Times helped investigators trace the truck’s route, leading them to a nearby auto repair shop. There, police found bloodstains, spent bullet casings, and other ballistic evidence.

Authorities concluded that the family was executed at the repair shop and then transported to another location where their bodies were left in the vehicle. Santillan stated, “While forensic results are pending, ballistic and blood evidence almost certainly confirm they were killed at that location.”
During the investigation, two workers from the repair shop, Hector Manuel Valdivia Martinez and a suspect known as El Chino, were detained. They were released after questioning due to insufficient evidence for formal charges, according to PEOPLE.
After their release, the two men, along with two relatives, were ambushed by an armed group. El Chino managed to escape, but the other three individuals remain missing. Prosecutor Blanca Trujillo noted that the attackers had been monitoring the exit for over two hours and had meticulously planned their actions, local media reported.
Garibay was a well-known TikTok influencer with over 44,000 followers. She often showcased a luxurious lifestyle, posting videos of high-end brands like Dior, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton, as well as luxury cars, cosmetic surgeries, and expensive vacations. Additionally, she shared lip-syncing videos to narco-corridos, a type of Mexican ballad that glorifies drug cartels. Some of her content suggested her husband’s connections to a cartel, which authorities believe may have drawn the attention of criminal groups.
