“I think it can play a very important role,” the Italian PM said while attending the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Her comments came after US President Donald Trump accused India and China of funding the ongoing conflict by continuing to buy oil from Russia.
“China and India are the primary funders of the ongoing war by continuing to purchase Russian oil,” Trump said, referring to the war in Ukraine.
The US has also imposed an additional 25% tariff on India for New Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil, taking the total levies imposed on India to 50%. However, India has defended its decision, citing domestic energy needs, and called the tariffs “unfair”.
Amid the tariff row, negotiations on the bilateral trade deal were also stalled.
However, the US President marked a shift in tone and announced that his team was continuing negotiations to address trade barriers with New Delhi.
Later on September 17, the US President further praised PM Modi in a birthday message, calling him a “friend” and lauding his leadership as “tremendous.” Trump also thanked PM Modi for backing his efforts to end the Russia–Ukraine war, adding, “Narendra: Thank you for your support on ending the War between Russia and Ukraine!”
Earlier this month, PM Modi and his Italian counterpart held a phone call and expressed a shared interest in bringing an early end to the conflict in Ukraine.
“Had an excellent conversation with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. We reaffirmed our joint commitment to deepen India-Italy Strategic Partnership, and shared interest in bringing an early end to the conflict in Ukraine,” PM Modi had said in a post on X.
PM Modi last met Meloni during his visit to Canada in June for the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis. During that meeting, the Prime Minister expressed his enthusiasm for the growing friendship between India and Italy.
