India on Friday strongly rejected Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s comments on Jammu and Kashmir made at the United Nations General Assembly, calling them “unwarranted” and “objectionable.”

The government reaffirmed that Kashmir is a strictly bilateral issue between India and Pakistan, and there is no role for any third party.

The response came after Erdogan, addressing the 80th session of the UNGA, said Turkey was “pleased” with the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan and urged that the Kashmir issue be resolved “on the basis of UN resolutions” through dialogue. The statement echoed his earlier expressions of support for Pakistan, including during a past visit to Islamabad.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, in a media briefing, stated that India’s position remains unchanged.

“Our stand on the Kashmir issue is very clear, there has been no change in it. As far as mediation is concerned, there too, there is no need for any third party to mediate on the bilateral issues between India and Pakistan,” Jaiswal said.

He called Erdogan’s remarks as “objectionable” and confirmed that India had lodged a strong protest with the Turkish ambassador in New Delhi.

“We reject such objectionable comments on matters that are internal to India. We have lodged a strong protest with the Turkish ambassador. Such unwarranted statements on India’s territorial integrity and sovereignty are unacceptable,” he added.

Jaiswal further noted that the core issue in Jammu and Kashmir is cross-border terrorism sponsored by Pakistan. “It would have been better if Pakistan’s policy of using cross-border terrorism against India, which remains the biggest threat to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, had been called out,” he said.

India has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is an internal matter and that all outstanding issues with Pakistan must be resolved bilaterally and peacefully, without interference or involvement from external parties.
