Elon Musk, back in 2020, publicly denied having any personal acquaintance with Ghislaine Maxwell, the former partner of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. At the time, Musk claimed he had only met Maxwell once, briefly, at a Vanity Fair party where she “photobombed” him. However, new revelations from recently unsealed taped interviews appear to contradict his earlier statements.

In a recorded interview conducted by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in July, Maxwell offered a different version of events. She recalled her first encounter with the Tesla and SpaceX CEO taking place years earlier, at a private multi-day birthday celebration for Google co-founder Sergey Brin. “I met him in—I don’t remember the year, but it’s going to be in 2010, ’11, something like that, I think, if my memory serves,” said Maxwell, now 63. She claimed Musk was among 30 to 50 attendees who spent “three or four days” on a Caribbean island to celebrate Brin’s birthday.

Maxwell also referred to meeting Musk again at an Oscars after-party, likely referencing the widely circulated 2014 Vanity Fair photograph in which the two were seen together. Although this image has often been cited as their only known connection, Maxwell’s comments suggest more familiarity than previously acknowledged. Still, she stopped short of alleging any close personal ties between Musk and Epstein, stating she had “no deeper knowledge” of their relationship.

One of the more surprising elements of the interview was her comment about Musk’s brother, Kimbal Musk. “He knew Mr. Musk’s brother as well,” she remarked, although she added a disclaimer about the clarity of her recollection. “But I don’t—my—like I said, my memory is not—it’s not as good as I would like it to be.”

Musk’s connections with Sergey Brin had already made headlines in 2022, when reports emerged alleging an affair between Musk and Brin’s then-wife, Nicole Shanahan, claims that Musk flatly denied. These new statements from Maxwell may renew scrutiny of Musk’s past associations, particularly in light of his outspoken support for transparency around the Epstein case.

While the Trump administration issued a memo in July asserting that no such “Epstein client list” exists, Musk has publicly pushed for the release of any relevant information. After distancing himself from Donald Trump administration earlier this year, Musk even alleged, though later deleted, that the President could be among those linked to Epstein.

The Department of Justice released the full transcripts of Maxwell’s interview last Friday.
