Four people have been injured in a car and stabbing attack at a synagogue in Manchester, police confirmed. Greater Manchester Police said a suspect was shot by firearms officers after the incident at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall, north of the city. The force confirmed the victims suffered injuries caused by both a vehicle and stabbings.

Police said they were called by a member of the public who reported seeing a car driven at worshippers and one man being stabbed. The police declared PLATO – the designation for a suspected terrorist attack – and a major incident. Shots were fired by armed officers a minute later, striking a man believed to be the offender.

Paramedics arrived later and treated four members of the public with injuries from both the vehicle and knife attack. Their conditions have not been disclosed. Police have urged the public to avoid the area while emergency services remain on scene.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham described the attack as a “serious incident” and advised people to stay away, adding that “the immediate danger appears to be over.” He praised the rapid response of those on site and Greater Manchester Police, saying the situation had been “dealt with effectively.”

The incident took place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, when the synagogue would have been hosting large numbers of worshippers.
