Peace talks between Ukraine and Russia are paused despite Donald Trump’s diplomatic efforts, Kremlin says.

The Kremlin said that peace talks with Ukraine were on hold, acknowledging that efforts by US President Donald Trump to broker an end to the three-and-a-half-year war have so far failed to gain traction.

Donald Trump launched an intense diplomatic push, including hosting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska earlier this month, but Moscow pressed ahead with its offensive and stepped-up aerial strikes in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, as per AFP, “Our negotiators have the opportunity to communicate through channels. But for now, it is probably more accurate to talk about a pause. You can’t wear rose-tinted glasses and expect that the negotiation process will yield immediate results.”

Will Vladimir Putin Meet Ukraine’s Zelenskyy Soon?

Vladimir Putin has effectively ruled out a direct meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who insists that a leaders’ summit is essential to break the deadlock. So far, three rounds of direct talks in Istanbul have failed to move beyond prisoner exchanges, with Moscow holding firm on sweeping demands. Chief among them is Ukraine’s full cession of the eastern Donbas region, where Russian forces have tightened control.

Kyiv has flatly rejected territorial concessions, instead calling for the deployment of European troops as peacekeepers- a proposal Moscow has dismissed as unacceptable.

Escalation On The Ground

The stalled diplomacy comes as Russia escalated its military campaign in Ukraine. Last week, Moscow launched its largest aerial assault of the war, killing several civilians and setting ablaze a government building in central Kyiv.
