Love motels in the Brazilian city of Belem are reinventing themselves as hotels ahead of November’s COP30 climate summit, stripping out sex chairs, mirrored ceilings and erotic decor in order to house thousands of visiting negotiators and diplomats.

Ricardo Teixeira, owner of the Love Lomas Pousada, said as per Guardian that a “de-eroticization” drive was underway to meet the demand for rooms as the city struggles with a chronic shortage of accommodation. He said, “There’s a certain stigma [attached to motels] … because they charge by the hour … but the only difference is that they’re mostly used for romantic liaisons. People still have the wrong idea about motels … that outdated image from TV and films that they are brothels.”

Hotel Crisis Overshadows Climate Talks

Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced two years ago that Belem would host COP30 but little new hotel infrastructure has been added since. Prices have surged dramatically, with reports of budget hotels charging nearly £800 a night for rooms that cost £10 last year, as per the report.

Belem has about 2,050 motel rooms and owners have already pledged 600 for the summit. At Love Lomas, staff are boxing up erotic paintings, replacing mattresses and offering guests the option of removing “erotic chairs” altogether, Ricardo Teixeira said.

“We hate to do this, but it’s our only option. Delegates are welcome to keep the chairs if they want- you never know, do you,” he told the outlet.

At Só Prazer (Pleasure Only), owner Cristiano Ribeiro has rented out eight rooms to COP visitors for $200–280 a night and painted murals of Amazon wildlife on the facade and removed sex-shop catalogues, hoping to appeal to international guests. Authorities have said that two cruise ships will also be docked to serve as floating hotels for 6,000 people.
