Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who was recently convicted for leading an attempted coup, has been rushed to the hospital after struggling with kidney issues and anaemia and will remain there for now, doctors said on Wednesday.

The 70-year-old far-right leader was admitted to the hospital while under arrest after suffering violent bouts of hiccups and vomiting. He has had multiple operations in recent years due to complications following a 2018 stabbing in his abdomen while campaigning for president.

The attack reportedly left him with ongoing intestinal complications, leading to at least six surgeries, the most recent being a 12-hour-long procedure in April. On Sunday, while still under house arrest in Brasília, Bolsonaro reportedly underwent a series of medical treatments, including laboratory tests and the surgical removal of skin lesions.

The incident comes just days after Bolsonaro was convicted by Brazil’s Supreme Electoral Court for his role in inciting the 2023 riots, when thousands of his supporters stormed government buildings in Brasília, challenging the legitimacy of his electoral defeat. The court ruling found him guilty of undermining democratic institutions, sentencing him to 27 years in prison.

A panel of five Supreme Court justices convicted Bolsonaro last week on charges linked to a conspiracy to overturn the 2022 election results, which he lost to leftist rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The court sentenced Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison. He was found guilty of five counts: armed criminal conspiracy, attempted abolition of the democratic rule of law, attempted coup d’état, violent destruction of public property, and damage to protected heritage sites.

Bolsonaro has been under house arrest in Brasília since early August. Police accused him and his son, Eduardo, of trying to interfere in the trial. Officers also discovered a 2024 document on his phone suggesting he considered seeking asylum in Argentina, as per the BBC.

His trial had strained ties between Brazil and the United States. US President Donald Trump said he was “very unhappy” with the conviction and described Bolsonaro as “outstanding” and imposed 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports.
