Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro was hospitalised on Tuesday under police guard after falling ill while under house arrest, said his son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro’s health has been a recurring concern since he survived a near-fatal stabbing while campaigning in 2018, reported Reuters.

The attack reportedly left him with ongoing intestinal complications, leading to at least six surgeries, the most recent being a 12-hour-long procedure in April. According to his son, Bolsonaro experienced severe hiccups, vomiting, and low blood pressure, prompting the urgent hospitalisation.

On Sunday, while still under house arrest in Brasília, Bolsonaro reportedly underwent a series of medical treatments, including laboratory tests and the surgical removal of skin lesions. Authorities have not disclosed the results of those tests or the specifics of his current condition.

The incident comes just days after Bolsonaro was convicted by Brazil’s Supreme Electoral Court for his role in inciting the 2023 riots, when thousands of his supporters stormed government buildings in Brasília, challenging the legitimacy of his electoral defeat. The court ruling found him guilty of undermining democratic institutions, sentencing him to 27 years in prison.
