Bangladesh’s Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Monday claimed that the recent unrest in Khagrachhari district is being fuelled by “external influences, including India or fascist elements.”

The unrest in the district comes after the alleged gang rape of a tribal schoolgirl sparked protests and violence. On Sunday, clashes broke out between the indigenous tribes and the Bengali settler community, resulting in at least three deaths and dozens of injuries, including to army and police personnel, TheReportLive reported.

Speaking to the media in Dhaka a day after the violence, Chowdhury said there is a major Hindu festival, referring to Durga Puja, taking place and added that some groups are trying to disrupt the celebrations preventing the festival from being enjoyed peacefully and in a religious spirit

“A major festival is underway for the Hindu community in our country. We are taking all necessary measures to ensure it proceeds peacefully. However, there are groups trying to disrupt it, preventing the festival from being celebrated joyfully and in a religious spirit. This is happening in Khagrachhari,” he said.

Chowdhury also said the violence was orchestrated by external influences and blamed India for playing a role in it.

“This is being orchestrated with the backing of external influences, including India or fascist elements. We are taking comprehensive measures to ensure no one can incite incidents. Our adviser for the Chittagong Hill Tracts is on site, monitoring the situation and coordinating with law enforcement and local leaders,” the adviser noted.

Khagrachhari is one of the three districts in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, a region with a history of ethnic tension between tribal groups such as the Chakma and Marma, and the Bengali settlers.

The unrest began when the tribal people protested the alleged rape of the girl by setting up roadblocks and burning tyres. The police have imposed Section 144, which bans public gatherings, to try to control the situation.
