US President Donald Trump has stumped his own previous claim that five jets were downed during the India-Pakistan conflict and has now said that seven aircraft were shot down during the four-day military confrontation between the two enemy neighbours.

Taking credit for the pause in hostilities between India and Pakistan on May 10, Trump claimed that he settled the “raging” war in 24 hours using trade as a tool.

“I have stopped all of these wars. A big one would have been India and Pakistan…” Trump said at the White House during a bilateral meeting with the President of the Republic of Korea.

“The war with India and Pakistan was the next level that was going to be a nuclear war… They already shot down 7 jets – that was raging. I said, ‘You want to trade? We are not doing any trade or anything with you if you keep fighting, you’ve got 24 hours to settle it’. They said, ‘Well, there’s no more war going on.’ I used that on numerous occasions. I used trade and whatever I had to use…” Trump claimed.

In July, he had claimed that five fighter jets were shot down, though he did not specify which side’s aircraft were downed.

The US President has made the mediation claims a number of times before; however, he has been fact-checked by New Delhi, which has made it clear that no discussion on trade was ever done with any US leader, including Trump and Vice President JD Vance, during Operation Sindoor.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also clarified it in no uncertain terms in the Lok Sabha during the Operation Sindoor debate that “no world leader asked India to stop Operation Sindoor”.
