A 35-year-old man admitted to a de-addiction centre in Uttar Pradesh developed a bizarre addiction to swallowing spoons and toothbrushes, leading doctors to surgically remove 29 steel spoons, 19 toothbrushes and two pens from his stomach.

The patient, identified as Sachin from Hapur, was undergoing treatment for drug addiction when he began secretly consuming utensils and other objects out of anger and frustration. According to doctors, attempts to remove the items via endoscopy failed due to the sheer volume, forcing surgeons to perform an operation.

Sachin alleged that poor conditions at the Hapur-based de-addiction facility contributed to his behaviour. He claimed patients were given little food- “very less vegetables and just a few chapatis”- and that even snacks sent from home often did not reach them.

Enraged, he began stealing steel spoons, breaking them into pieces in the bathroom and swallowing them with water. He later added toothbrushes and pens. The habit only came to light after he complained of severe stomach pain, prompting scans that revealed the objects inside.

Hospital officials said the surgery was successful and the patient is recovering.
