Visakhapatnam’s iconic Beach Road has always been a favourite spot for families, tourists, and locals looking to unwind by the sea. Known for its scenic coastline, naval history, and museums that celebrate India’s maritime strength, the stretch has added another unique attraction — a decommissioned Navy helicopter turned into a museum.

The UH-3H helicopter, which served the Indian Navy for 17 years between 2007 and 2024, has been permanently stationed at RK Beach Road, right between the Tu-142 aircraft museum and the Sea Harrier fighter jet. This addition brings yet another slice of naval history closer to the public, offering visitors a rare chance to see military aviation up close.

A Helicopter With A Legacy

For nearly two decades, the UH-3H helicopter played a key role in naval operations. After being retired from active service, it has now been preserved and displayed so that future generations can learn about its role in defending the nation. The museum was inaugurated just last month by Andhra Pradesh state home minister Anitha, and within days, it was thrown open to the public.

A Family Day-Out Experience

Families and children visiting the Beach Road now have more than just the sea breeze and street snacks to enjoy. Tourists say the chance to step inside a Navy helicopter is both educational and exciting. Children, in particular, get to see the cockpit, controls, and structure of the aircraft — something that goes far beyond textbooks.

Tickets are reasonably priced:

  • Rs 100 per adult
  • Rs 50 per child
  • Rs 30 per student (for school groups)
  • Rs 220 for carrying a video camera inside

With such affordable access, locals say they plan to revisit frequently, making the museum a weekly outing spot.

Adding To Vizag’s Maritime Charm

Visakhapatnam is already home to some of the most unique naval museums in the country, including the Submarine Museum (Kursura) and the TU-142 aircraft museum. Now, the addition of the UH-3H helicopter further cements the city’s reputation as a hub where defence history meets public curiosity.

Tourists visiting Vizag’s RK Beach Road can now enjoy the sea, explore several museums, and walk through military aircraft all in a single stretch. For families, it is the perfect mix of entertainment, education, and adventure.

If you are in Visakhapatnam, this is one stop you should not miss.
