Vice-President Elections: The stage is set for CP Radhakrishnan and B Sudershan Reddy to battle it out for the post of Vice-President of India, with the election for the high-stakes contest taking place on Tuesday, September 9.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition’s Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) have geared up for the high-stakes election, with both sects holding separate workshops and mock polls to ensure that not even a single vote is wasted.

What Will Happen Tomorrow?

The voting process, in which the members of both houses of the parliament, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, would cast their vote, would commence at 10 am and conclude at 5 pm on Tuesday. The counting of votes will begin at 6 pm the same day.

The MPs’ would be selecting their desired preference through ballot paper which would consist of two columns.

In the first column, the names of both candidates (CP Radhakrishnan and Sudershan Reddy) will be listed. In the second column, the voters will have to mention their preference as “first” or “second” next to the candidate’s name.

Notably, the MPs are required to write their preference in numbers, not in words. For example, 1 or 2. Words such as “one” or “two” are not allowed.

As per the directions by the Election Commission, numbers can be written using the international numeral system, Roman numerals, or numerals from any Indian language.

Further, the voters don’t need to mention both their preferences.

How Will Counting Take Place?

For the counting of the votes polled, firstly, all ballot papers will be sorted. Then the Election Commission officials would sort valid and invalid ballot papers.

Based on the number of valid votes counted, the quota will be determined in order to decide the winner.

The quota is calculated by dividing the total number of valid votes by two and then adding one. For example, if the total valid votes are 700, the quota will be 351.

The candidate who receives first-preference votes exceeding the quota will be declared the winner.

If no candidate achieves this on first preferences, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated and their votes transferred based on next preferences. This continues until one candidate is elected.

Vice President Election 2025

The election is conducted under the supervision of the Election Commission, which appoints a Returning Officer, typically a senior parliamentary official, to oversee the process.

A prospective candidate must secure at least 20 proposers and 20 seconders from among MPs to file a valid nomination. A security deposit of Rs 15,000 is also required.

The election of the vice president is governed by the provisions under Articles 64 and 68 of the Constitution.

The post of Vice-President fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament on July 21, citing health reasons.
