Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday called for a fundamental shift in India’s education and public service training, advocating for a decolonised approach that blends traditional Indian wisdom with modern education.

Bhagwat criticised the existing civil services training, noting that for cadres like the IAS and IPS, trainees are still taught “drinking etiquettes”, a practice he deemed more suitable for IFS (Indian Foreign Service) officers who engage in diplomacy. He argued that such elements are a holdover from colonial rule and that “true education and good manners are universal”.

In a push for decolonisation, he stressed that English should be learnt as a functional language, not as a means to become culturally Western. “We are Indians,” he stated, emphasising the need for a deep-rooted sense of national identity.

The RSS chief also highlighted the National Education Policy (NEP) as a positive step, outlining its “five-dimensional education” approach that needs to be developed gradually. He proposed connecting mainstream education with the ancient Gurukul system, drawing a parallel with Finland’s highly regarded education model, which he noted follows a similar, holistic philosophy. Bhagwat described the Gurukul tradition as one of the best forms of learning and a model for the future.

Additionally, Bhagwat clarified the organisational structure of the RSS. He stated that the Sangh has no subordinate bodies, asserting that all other affiliated organisations are self-sufficient and autonomous in their functioning.
