Banswara farmer’s witty dig at Rahul Gandhi’s “aloo to sona” remark delights PM Modi during PM-KUSUM scheme interaction in Rajasthan.

A farmer from Rajasthan’s Banswara stole the spotlight at a public interaction on Thursday when he took a veiled dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s much-ridiculed “aloo to sona” (potato to gold) remark — drawing a hearty laugh from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

PM Modi was interacting with beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) scheme — a flagship initiative aimed at promoting solar energy use in agriculture, from Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, during his visit to Banswara today.

During the interaction, one farmer praised the project and said that his dream has come true with the installation of a solar plant on his land.

He further took a dig at Rahul Gandhi over his “aaloo se sona” comment, saying that some people claimed that potatoes will give gold, but PM Modi gave gold from the land.

“Main maanata hoon ki logon ne kaha ki aaloo se sona hoga. Aaloo se sona to nahin hua lekin hamaaree jameen se aapane sona hamen jaroor de diya (I believe that people said that potatoes will give gold. Potatoes did not give gold. But you gave us gold from our land),” the farmer said to the Prime Minister.

The remark drew loud laughter from the audience and a visible chuckle from PM Modi.

While interacting with beneficiaries, PM Modi praised the farmers of Banswara for embracing solar energy and becoming partners in the country’s green growth journey.

“Banswara ke kisaanon ne suraj ki roshni se apne khet ki takdeer badal di hai (the farmers of Banswara have changed the fate of their fields with the power of the sun),” he said.

He also highlighted how the PM-KUSUM scheme is helping farmers become not just food providers but also energy producers, by enabling them to sell surplus power to the grid.

The reference was to a 2017 speech by Rahul Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh, where he claimed a machine could be developed to turn potatoes into gold — a statement that has since haunted the Congress leader and been frequently cited by the BJP as an example of his perceived disconnect from reality.
