The convict, identified as Bharatesh Raosab Mirji (28), of Raibag taluk, had abducted the girl when she was returning home, news agency PTI reported.
Mirji allegedly raped and strangled the victim at his residence before tying her body to a rock and dumping it in a well to prevent it from surfacing.
The victim’s father lodged a missing persons complaint with the Kuduchi police after she did not return home.
Sniffer dogs were pressed into operation to trace the girl, and they pointed at the well. Later, the body was recovered.
Investigation led to the arrest of Mirji, and on September 26, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act Court found him guilty. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 45,000 on the accused.
In another incident, the Karnataka High Court has refused to grant bail to a man accused in a rape case, invoking a verse from Manusmriti about respecting women and a remark by Mahatma Gandhi while underscoring the need to safeguard women’s dignity.
The case concerns a 19-year-old Scheduled Tribe woman from Banka, Bihar, whose parents are employed at a cardamom estate in Kerala. On April 2, she arrived at Bengaluru’s KR Puram railway station around 1.30 am from Kerala.
While on her way to Mahadevapura for a meal with her cousin, she was allegedly accosted by two men near the station. Prosecutors say one of the accused restrained the cousin while the other dragged the woman to a secluded spot and raped her.
The two were booked under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sections on rape, wrongful restraint, intimidation, and common intention, along with charges under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
