The Yogi Adityanath government has launched a new tourism initiative in Uttar Pradesh that allows local residents to convert their homes into guest accommodations for visitors. The scheme, rolled out in the religious town of Chitrakoot, is aimed at creating new sources of income for residents while simultaneously providing affordable stay options for pilgrims and tourists.

Until now, earnings were largely confined to jobs or traditional businesses. But under this plan, households with surplus space can register their homes with the Tourism Department and legally rent out rooms to visitors. Officials believe the model will strengthen the local economy while ensuring that devotees arriving in large numbers to the sacred city receive safe, low-cost, and homely lodging facilities.

Explaining the framework, the Regional Tourism Officer of Chitrakoot Dham Mandal, RK Rawat, said, “This scheme has been kept completely separate from the commercial hotel business. Neither commercial licence nor heavy investment is required in this. Registration will be done under the domestic process and recognition will be given only on the basis of domestic electricity connection.”

According to the department, anyone with a building plan approved by the Development Authority can apply online through the regional tourism office. Once registered, homeowners will be permitted to offer their extra rooms to tourists at government-notified rental rates.

The Tourism Department has underlined that the process has been deliberately simplified to encourage participation. Homes will retain their residential nature, and owners will not be burdened with the kind of regulatory obligations required for commercial hotels.

Chitrakoot, often referred to as ‘Dharamnagari’, is revered as the land of Lord Rama’s penance and draws lakhs of pilgrims annually. With the influx of devotees increasing year after year, officials believe this programme will bridge the gap between rising demand for accommodation and the limited number of conventional hotels in the region.
