A shocking case of medical negligence has emerged in Bihar’s West Champaran district, where a child with fever was mistakenly given an anti-rabies injection at Bagaha Sub-Divisional Hospital.

Sanjay Chaudhary, a resident of Pipariya, took his grandson Saurabh to the Bagaha sub-divisional hospital for treatment. Saurabh was experiencing a high fever of approximately 104 degrees Celsius. In the Outpatient Department (OPD), Dr Rampravesh Bharti mistakenly prescribed an anti-rabies injection, typically given after a dog bite. Following the doctor’s instructions, Saurabh received the injection at the medicine counter and was asked to return on September 1 for the fourth dose.

Confused by this request, Sanjay Chaudhary inquired about the September 1 appointment, only to be informed by the health worker that his grandson had been treated for a dog bite and given the third dose of the anti-rabies vaccine. Outraged by the apparent medical blunder, Saurabh’s family accused the hospital staff of negligence and demanded accountability.

Deputy Superintendent in charge, Dr Ashok Kumar Tiwari, clarified that during the OPD hours, Dr Arun Kumar Yadav was on post-mortem duty, and Dr Bharti was overseeing the OPD. He explained that a mix-up had occurred, leading to Saurabh receiving a prescription intended for another patient.

Assuring there was no harm from the injection, Dr Tiwari stated that proper fever treatment and medicines were subsequently provided to Saurabh.

Despite these assurances, Saurabh’s grandparents, Sanjay Chaudhary and Indu Devi, continue to demand a thorough investigation and appropriate action against the responsible healthcare professionals.
