In a shocking incident that has left Madhya Pradesh stunned, an 18-year-old student allegedly set a 26-year-old guest teacher on fire in Narsinghpur district on Monday, according to a report in NDTV. The attack, reportedly motivated by a personal grudge, took place in the Kotwali police station area.

According to news agency PTI, the accused has been identified as Suryansh Kochar, a former student of Excellence School (Utkrisht Vidyalaya) where the victim was posted as a guest teacher recently.

Attack Over Past Complaint

The NDTV report citing to police mentioned Kochar harbored resentment against the teacher after she filed a complaint against him for making an inappropriate remark about her during the school’s Independence Day celebration.

The teacher, who wore a saree to the August 15 event, had reported the objectionable comment to the school authorities.

It is learnt that the attack occurred around at 3.30pm on Monday, when Kochar arrived at the teacher’s residence carrying a bottle filled with petrol. Without warning, he allegedly poured the flammable liquid on her and set her on fire before fleeing the scene.

The victim sustained 10–15 percent burn injuries and was immediately rushed to the district hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment, the NDTV report suggested. Doctors have confirmed that while the injuries are serious, they are not life-threatening.

School Principal GS Patel said the victim had been posted as a lab technician as well as a guest teacher just one-and-a-half months ago, PTI reported.

“This incident has shocked everyone,” Patel added.

History Of Obsession

Police officials revealed that the accused had known the teacher for over two years and had developed a one-sided emotional attachment towards her.

PTI cited Deputy Superintendent of Police Sandeep Bhuria as saying that the accused has been arrested and a case registered against him.

“The incident is related to a love affair and investigation is being done on that basis. Further action will be taken on the basis of their statements,” PTI quoted the DSP as saying.
