An IndiGo flight bound for Phuket from Mumbai was diverted to Chennai on Friday following a security threat onboard, the airline confirmed.

The nature of the threat was not disclosed by the authorities, who said that they are conducting detailed checks before the aircraft is cleared to resume its journey.

“Flight 6E 1089 operating from Mumbai to Phuket on September 19, 2025, was diverted to Chennai due to a security threat noticed onboard. As per established protocol, relevant authorities were informed immediately and the flight will undergo necessary security checks in Chennai,” said IndiGo in an official statement.

Owing to night curfew restrictions at Phuket airport, the onward departure has been rescheduled.

IndiGo assured passengers that their safety remains the top priority.

“We are making all efforts to minimise inconvenience to customers, including offering them refreshments and sharing regular updates. As always, the safety and security of our customers, crew, and aircraft is our topmost priority,” the airline said.

The incident comes close on the heels of another scare involving an IndiGo aircraft earlier this week.

A Delhi-bound flight carrying 151 passengers, including Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav, was forced to abort takeoff at Lucknow airport after the aircraft failed to lift off properly near the end of the runway.

Eyewitnesses and officials said the pilot acted quickly, deploying emergency brakes to halt the plane and avert a possible runway overrun.

All passengers and crew were safely evacuated without injury.
