A 24-year-old woman was killed by her father in Gwalior’s Beldar Ka Pura locality on Thursday morning following a family dispute, police said.

The incident took place around 9:30 am under the Janakganj police station limits. According to officials, the accused, identified as Badam Singh Kushwaha, allegedly threw chilli powder into his daughter Rani Kushwaha’s eyes before stabbing her multiple times in the stomach. She died on the spot.

Preliminary investigation suggests the crime stemmed from an ongoing family conflict, worsened by the father’s alcohol addiction and financial instability, The Times of India reported.

Singh, who is disabled in one leg due to an accident during the Covid-19 lockdown, had reportedly been unemployed for some time.

According to Rani’s mother, Bhagwati Bai, Singh frequently took money from the family’s small grocery shop to buy alcohol. “He would abuse and beat us if anyone protested. Rani frequently objected to his behavior,” she said.

On the morning of the incident, Singh reportedly tried to take money again. When Rani resisted, he became angry and violent, ultimately attacking her and leading to her death.

Neighbours who heard the disturbance quickly informed the police. Officers reached the location soon after and arrested Badam Singh at the scene.

SP Dharamveer Yadav said the accused has a history of alcohol use. The exact motive behind the killing is still being investigated.

Janakganj police confirmed the arrest and said Singh is currently in custody for questioning. Further action is underway.
