In a shocking incident, a first-year M Tech student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU), was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Wednesday.

He was soon taken to the campus medical facility and later was declared dead. Initial reports suggested a case of cardiac arrest.

IIT-BHU chief proctor Dr Sanjay Singh said that on being alerted by hostel inmates, an ambulance was arranged and Chauhan was rushed to SSL Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

However, a detailed post-mortem report is awaited.

Anoop, a native of Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh, had joined IIT-BHU two months ago. He was scheduled to take an exam at 8 am on Wednesday.

There was panic in the hostel after Anoop did not wake even as his classmates headed for an exam. The hostel inmates gave him CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and rushed him to SSL Hospital by university ambulance. Doctors declared him dead, suspecting his death was caused by cardiac arrest.

The hostel inmates and his room partner said that following dinner at the hostel mess, they all returned to their rooms around 11 pm on Tuesday. According to police, he and two friends had studied in his room until around 3 am the previous night before going to sleep.

The father was informed of his son’s death by IIT-BHU shortly before the scheduled exam. He has not alleged any wrongdoing.

Following the post-mortem, the police handed over the body to the family.
