A 20-year-old woman, DC Kumari, was allegedly killed by her in-laws in Bihar’s Khagaria district over a dowry demand, highlighting a disturbing rise in such cases across the country following a similar incident in Noida. Kumari was reportedly strangled and later hanged in Barkhandi Tola village after her family failed to promptly provide a gold chain promised during her brother’s wedding.

The victim was married to Vibhishan Yadav about a year ago. Victim’s father, Jago Yadav, a Munger resident, alleged that her husband and her in-laws constantly harassed her for dowry. He had assured her in-laws he would fulfil their demands after some time, but they did not agree, he told the media.

“I sought two months to arrange it,” he said, trying to hold back his tears, when another relative chipped in, “…nahi toh mar denge (or else, they said would kill her),” NDTV quoted him as saying.

The victim’s relatives said the accused husband used to do farming, but later took to selling ganja and liquor in the dry state.

Her brother, Sandeep Kumar, alleged that his sister was brutally beaten to death by her in-laws before they hanged her body. He claimed there were visible injury marks across her body.

“We gave them whatever we could. But they kept demanding a gold chain and a vehicle. I got married two months ago, and that’s why they have been demanding a (gold) chain. We said we can’t right away and asked for two months. That’s why they killed her,” said the brother, adding that they have lodged a police complaint.

The victim’s body was released to her family after the post-mortem examination, while the accused remains absconding, NDTV reported.

The case comes on the heels of the brutal killing of 28-year-old Nikki Bhati, who was set on fire by her in-laws last week over a ₹36 lakh dowry demand. The incident drew nationwide outrage after a video surfaced showing Nikki staggering down a staircase while engulfed in flames.

Days later, another dowry-related murder was reported from Uttar Pradesh. In Amroha, a police constable’s wife was set on fire by in-laws and left battling for life.
