Chandigarh has achieved a historic milestone, becoming India’s first slum-free city. The declaration followed the demolition of Shahpur Colony, the city’s last slum. This marked the end of a twelve-year effort by the local administration to clear slums and reclaim valuable public land.

In total, over 520 acres have reportedly been recovered, providing the city with more room for growth and improved planning. According to The Indian Express, Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav confirmed that the demolition of Shahpur Colony added another five acres to the reclaimed land. “The demolition of Shahpur Colony marks a significant milestone for Chandigarh,” he said.

Authorities believe the cleared land will now open up new space for development and create opportunities for improved infrastructure.

Shahpur Colony Demolished as the Final Step

Police and officials were present at Shahpur Colony to ensure the demolition went ahead safely. The operation began on September 29, and the land was cleared without major disruption. This demolition officially closed the chapter on Chandigarh’s slum settlements.

How the Drive Began Over a Decade Ago

The campaign to clear slums started more than ten years ago. It has gradually removed some of the city’s largest colonies. In 2014, 89 acres were reclaimed when Kalyan Colony was cleared. The same year, Ambedkar Colony was also demolished, freeing another 65 acres. More recently, in 2022, authorities recovered 65 acres from Colony No. 4.

Value of Land Recovered During the Campaign

Officials revealed that this year alone, land worth more than Rs 2,500 crore has been reportedly reclaimed. Along with Shahpur, other major colonies like Adarsh Colony, Sector 25 Colony, and Sanjay Colony in the Industrial Area have been cleared in recent years.

Two months ago, the estate department also vacated more land as part of the ongoing campaign.

Internet Reacts to Chandigarh’s Milestone

The announcement sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some users lauded the city’s achievement, others raised concerns about the fate of the displaced residents.

A user asked, “Where were they relocated?”

Another wrote, “It’s not slum free, but the slum has been bulldozed without any rehabilitation.”

Someone else questioned, “Where did the slum dwellers go?”

Others, however, viewed it positively. “Chandigarh now sets a benchmark for Indian cities aiming at inclusive growth,” a user commented.

Another added, “Chandigarh is now slum-free, amazing progress. Hope everyone got a good new home.”
