In his first reaction to the Karur tragedy, TVK chief Vijay said he was “shattered” and in “unbearable pain” over the loss of lives at his rally.
Extending condolences, he said his heart went out to the families of those killed and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Issuing a second statement later, Vijay expressed profound grief, saying the incident had left him overwhelmed with sorrow.
He announced financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh each for the families of those who died and Rs 2 lakh each for the injured.

The stampede during Vijay’s rally in Karur on Saturday claimed 40 lives and left nearly 100 people injured.
Tamil Nadu Director General of Police G Venkataraman said organisers had projected an audience of 10,000, but close to 27,000 people turned up at the 1.2 lakh sq ft venue.
About 500 police personnel had been deployed.
Venkataraman added that the crowd began swelling early after TVK’s official social media handle announced Vijay’s arrival at 12 noon, despite permission being granted for the rally between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.
“People had been waiting since 11 a.m. without food or water in the heat, and Vijay eventually arrived only at 7:40 p.m.,” he said, noting that it was “too early” to determine the exact trigger of the deadly surge.
