A superintendent engineer in Bihar’s rural development department has come under scrutiny after investigators uncovered assets far exceeding his known income. The probe is still assessing the full extent of his property, as the Nitish Kumar-led government intensifies its crackdown on corruption.

Vinod Kumar Rai, the engineer in question, has reportedly amassed cash, diamond and gold jewellery, gold biscuits, and extensive property holdings. The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) team raided his residence in Patna and his office in Sitamarhi, uncovering significant assets. According to sources, the engineer’s wealth is estimated to be around Rs 100 crore or possibly more.

During the raid on Friday, the EOW team discovered Rs 35 lakh in cash, partially burnt notes worth about Rs 20 lakh, and charred notes of considerable value. Additionally, more than 12 bank deposits, multiple plots, gold biscuits, and jewellery were recovered. According to sources, Rai was detained and interrogated at his home, with officials questioning how he acquired such wealth.

Further investigation revealed that Rai and his wife attempted to burn the notes to conceal their illicit earnings. The EOU team seized the burnt currency on the spot. The investigation continues, with expectations of more revelations.

Sources indicate that action may also be taken against his wife, Babli Rai, for obstructing the investigation and burning currency notes. The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) is likely to get involved, having already contacted the EOW for information on the case.
