A local court in Assam on Thursday sentenced a man to death for murdering a college student who had rejected his marriage proposal, in a crime that took place four years ago in August 2021.

The District and Sessions Court in Dhemaji, led by Judge Ajay Faglu, found the accused, Rintu Sarma, guilty under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 302 for murder, Section 307 for attempt to murder, and Section 324 for voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons.

Nandita Saikia, a student of Moridhol College, was walking home with her father and a friend when Sarma, a fourth-grade employee at the same college, launched a violent attack with a machete. All three were seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital. Nandita, who suffered severe injuries, was later shifted to a hospital in Dibrugarh, where she died five days later.

Calling it a “rarest of rare” case, the judge said that life imprisonment would not be enough to serve justice. “Accordingly, the convict is sentenced to death for the offence of murder under Section 302 IPC and will be hanged by neck till death,” the court said in its order.

In addition to the death sentence, Sarma was given 10 years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 307 IPC and fined Rs 10,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in six more months in prison. Under Section 324, he received three years of rigorous imprisonment and a Rs 5,000 fine, with an extra three months in jail if the fine is not paid.
