Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi and his wife, Sunita Dwivedi, pledged to donate their organs after death on Wednesday, joining a growing list of senior Armed Forces personnel who have taken the step to spread awareness about organ donation.

At the New Delhi event, the Army Chief and his wife were joined by other senior officers who also pledged to donate their organs.

General Dwivedi is not the first to take this pledge, as in the past, several senior military leaders, including former Chiefs of Defence Staff and senior officers, have also signed up for organ donation.

Notably, former Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane had also pledged his organs, while many serving officers and veterans have registered with organ banks in recent years.

The Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) has been actively promoting awareness of organ and tissue donation among soldiers and their families, stressing that organ pledges by military leaders carry a symbolic impact, encouraging others to come forward.

Organ Donation In India

India has one of the world’s largest needs for organ transplants but faces an acute shortage.

According to the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), nearly five lakh people die every year due to a lack of organs.

Despite awareness campaigns, the country still records only about 0.4 organ donations per million population, far lower than global averages.

Military hospitals across India, including the Armed Forces Organ Retrieval and Transplantation Organisation (AORTO), have been part of the push to strengthen the system.

Armed forces personnel, given their ethos of service, are often at the forefront of such initiatives.

By pledging to donate their organs, General Dwivedi and his wife have reinforced this culture of selflessness.

Defence officials expressed hope that the Army Chief’s step would inspire many more citizens to commit to saving lives through organ donation.
