Andhra Pradesh is facing a critical weather situation. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state for the next four days, with authorities on high alert. Officials caution that this round of rains could bring significant disruptions and flood threats, especially in riverine and low-lying areas.

Recommended Stories

State home minister Vangalapudi Anitha convened an urgent review meeting with senior officials to assess preparedness and coordinate preventive measures. Discussions focused on flood control, rescue readiness, and public safety measures. Authorities have issued strong advisories: fishermen should avoid venturing into the sea, and residents in the Godavari basin must exercise extreme caution.

A Rising Threat To The Godavari River

While rains have started to ease in parts of Andhra Pradesh, heavy rainfall upstream in Telangana and Chhattisgarh is pushing floodwaters downstream, raising the Godavari River to dangerous levels.

Bhadrachalam (Telangana): Authorities have issued a danger warning for the Godavari River here.

Rajahmundry (Andhra Pradesh): Water levels are rising sharply, increasing flood risks for downstream areas.

Sabari River (Alluri Seetharamaraju District): Flows have risen above the danger mark, with readings at 43 feet at the confluence of the Sabari and Godavari rivers in Kalaika, Koonavaram.

These rising flows have already caused serious damage in affected districts.

Flood Impact On Local Communities

Chintur and Kunavaram Mandals: Floodwaters have breached causeways at Sokileru Koyyiguru (Chintur) and Kondarajupet (Kunavaram), cutting off villages and disrupting transport. Hundreds of acres of farmland—about 100 acres—have been submerged, inflicting heavy losses on local farmers.

Konaseema Region: Low-lying areas of P. Gannavaram mandal in Ambedkar Konaseema district are submerged. Residents now depend on boats for daily travel and essential supplies, with many forced to navigate dangerous waters to continue their livelihoods.

Official Warnings And Safety Measures

Authorities have urged the public to be vigilant for at least the next four days, warning that streams, canals, and riverbanks could overflow suddenly. Specific advisories include:

  • Avoid crossing streams or canals during high water levels.
  • Stay alert for government warnings and evacuation orders.
  • Residents in riverine and low-lying areas should be prepared to relocate to safer ground if needed.
  • The Disaster Management Authority has stressed that these precautions are essential to prevent loss of life and property.

Why These Rains Are So Dangerous

Andhra Pradesh’s current flood risk is compounded by several factors:

  • Heavy upstream rainfall in Telangana and Chhattisgarh, feeding the Godavari and Sabari rivers.
  • Already saturated soil and reservoirs, reducing absorption capacity.
  • Low-lying geography of many districts, making them highly vulnerable to flooding.

This combination makes the current rainfall pattern particularly dangerous — not just for immediate flood threats but also for long-term agricultural and livelihood impacts.

What Residents Should Know

For residents in affected districts, preparation is key. Local authorities are monitoring river levels and rain forecasts round-the-clock and have activated disaster response teams. Emergency helplines are in operation for rescue and relief efforts.

Residents should:

Keep emergency kits ready.

  • Stay indoors during heavy rain unless evacuation is necessary.
  • Keep mobile phones charged for alerts and updates.
  • Follow instructions from local administration and disaster management teams.

The next four days will be critical for Andhra Pradesh. With heavy rainfall and rising river levels, flooding is a real and present danger. Officials urge caution, preparation, and cooperation to minimise harm.
