What began as a dispute over the return of a loan turned ugly in Ahmedabad’s Bapunagar area, where a 57-year-old woman and her son were allegedly assaulted by their neighbour and his relative.

According to police, Vijayaben Soni, a resident of the Gujarat Housing Board colony, had lent Rs 2 lakh to her neighbour, Shaktisinh Mojubha Jadeja, nearly a year ago to help him tide over financial difficulties. Despite repeated reminders, the money was not returned.

Last Monday, Vijayaben’s son Manish went to Shaktisinh’s house to demand repayment. An argument broke out, during which Shaktisinh allegedly called his brother-in-law, Shivbhadrasinh Jhala, to the spot. The two men then reportedly attacked Manish.

The situation escalated further when Vijayaben and her husband returned home and tried to intervene. In the scuffle, Vijayaben was allegedly pushed to the ground, suffering a fracture in her hand. Neighbours rushed to the family’s aid and called an ambulance, which took the injured woman to the hospital.

Both accused fled the scene before the police could arrive. A formal complaint has since been filed at Bapunagar police station against Shaktisinh Jadeja and Shivbhadrasinh Jhala. The case has been registered, and an investigation is underway.

Incidents of such loan-related disputes spiralling into violence are not uncommon in urban neighbourhoods, where informal money-lending between acquaintances is widespread. Police say the case serves as a reminder of how personal financial disagreements can quickly escalate into law-and-order issues when not resolved legally.
