This year, Janmashtami falls on Saturday, August  16, as per Drik Panchang. Janmashtami 2025: Lord Krishna’s childhood love for butter and curd inspires many of the dishes prepared during the festival.

Janmashtami 2025: 10 Classic Dishes You Can Make At Home

  1. Makhan Mishri: The most iconic offering to Krishna, made with freshly churned butter and sugar crystals. It is simple: churn cream into butter, rinse in cold water, and mix with mishri. Serve in small clay pots for a traditional touch.
  2. Panchamrit: A sacred mix of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar, used in rituals and then served as prasad. Each ingredient holds symbolic meaning, from purity to strength. Tulsi leaves and holy water make it even more auspicious.
  3. Kheer: This creamy rice pudding is cooked with milk, sugar, cardamom, and dry fruits. Serve warm or chilled, garnished with saffron strands for extra flavour.
  4. Makhana Paag: Fox nuts roasted in ghee and coated with jaggery or sugar syrup until crisp. A crunchy, wholesome sweet often made in Mathura and Vrindavan.
  5. Dahi Chura (Poha with Curd and Jaggery): A humble yet special dish of softened poha mixed with thick curd and jaggery. Bananas or grated coconut can be added for richness.
  6. Besan Ladoo: Sweet, round ladoos made by roasting gram flour in ghee, then mixing with sugar and cardamom. A melt-in-the-mouth festive favourite.
  7. Dhaniya Panjiri: A mixture of roasted coriander seeds, nuts, ghee, and sugar. Nutritious, gluten-free, and quick to prepare, it’s a must for Janmashtami in many homes.
  8. Mohan Bhog: A royal semolina sweet cooked with milk, sugar, and spices until soft and fragrant. Popular in Bengali celebrations.
  9. Sabudana Kheer: Tapioca pearls simmered in milk and sugar, flavoured with cardamom, and garnished with nuts. Perfect for those fasting during the festival.
  10. Dry Fruit Laddu: Energy-packed balls made from dates, figs, cashews, and almonds bound together with ghee. Ideal for both children and elders.

Whether you prepare one dish or all ten, each offering is a gesture of love and devotion to Lord Krishna. These simple recipes bring the spirit of Janmashtami into your home, blending tradition with the joy of cooking for the divine.
