Volkswagen has commenced local assembly of its premium SUV, the Tayron R-Line, in India, marking another milestone in the brand’s strategy to make German-engineered vehicles more accessible to Indian customers. The model is being assembled at the company’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant in Maharashtra and is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2026

Strengthening premium SUV portfolio

The start of production of the Tayron R-Line is a strategic addition to Volkswagen India’s SUV portfolio, as the company looks to build momentum in the premium segment. The Tayron R-Line rolled off the production line less than a year after its global debut, underlining the company’s focus on faster localisation and market responsiveness. Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO, Škoda Auto Volkswagen India, said the milestone reflects the company’s commitment to customer-centric engineering and operational readiness. He added that the Tayron R-Line has been developed to align with the lifestyle needs and aspirations of premium SUV buyers in India.

Focus on local assembly

Nitin Kohli, Brand Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, said there is strong demand for premium German-engineered vehicles in the country, and local assembly is a key lever to improve accessibility. He noted that bringing the Tayron R-Line to local production soon after its global launch demonstrates Volkswagen’s intent to drive growth in India. Positioned as Volkswagen India’s most premium SUV, the Tayron R-Line offers a seven-seater layout, everyday practicality and a sporty R-Line design. With production now underway, the company aims to strengthen its presence in the premium SUV space ahead of the planned market launch in early 2026

Volkswagen currently sells models such as the Taigun, Virtus, Tiguan R-Line and Golf GTI in India, and the addition of the locally assembled Tayron R-Line is expected to further broaden its offering in the higher-end SUV segment.
