Tyre overheating, not battery fault, behind BE 6 incident: Mahindra

Mahindra on Tuesday issued an official statement addressing the recent fire incident involving its electric SUV, the BE 6, near Gulaothi, saying that the battery and motor were not damaged and remained functional after the event.“We are aware of the recent incident involving a Mahindra BE 6 vehicle near Gulaothi. Based on an on-site investigation along with onboard sensor data and software diagnostics, it had confirmed that “the EV battery and motor remain fully intact and unaffected,” the company said in a statement. Tyre failure identified as cause

According to the statement, all safety systems in the vehicle operated as designed. “The driver and all occupants exited the vehicle safely and are unharmed,” the company said.

Mahindra said a tyre high temperature alert was issued, after which safety measures were activated. These included limiting the vehicle’s speed and initiating a system shutdown, which brought the vehicle to a halt.

The company stated, “Despite intense thermal stress originating from an external source, the high voltage battery remains unharmed and fully functional. Battery health parameters and individual cell voltages are within specified limits, and the motor is intact.”

Vehicle data showed that the car was driven for over 10 minutes at about 60 km/h on a fully deflated rear right tyre, despite repeated tyre pressure alerts being issued. Mahindra said onboard sensors indicated that the electronic stability programme (ESP) and traction control system (TCS) were actively intervening to control wheel spin caused by the deflated tyre.

It added that the rear right wheel high temperature alert was triggered due to friction between the deflated tyre and the road surface.

“Analysis of bystander video footage confirms that the fire originated from the rear right tyre rubber, establishing the root cause of the incident,” the statement said.

Mahindra said all its vehicles are designed and built to meet safety standards and urged customers to follow vehicle alerts and warnings. “Customer safety remains our highest priority,” the company added.
