Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) on Monday said it plans to set up a new vehicle manufacturing plant in the Bidkin Industrial Area in Maharashtra, as the Japanese automaker looks to strengthen its long-term growth plans in India and expand its regional supply capabilities.

According to the official press release, the new facility is expected to begin production in the first half of 2029 and will have an annual production capacity of 1,00,000 vehicles. Toyota said the plant will employ around 2,800 people at the start of operations.

The upcoming unit will house key manufacturing processes, including stamping, welding, painting and assembly, and will produce a new SUV model.

The company said the new plant will support its ability to respond to demand growth and market changes in India and neighbouring regions, while improving its production flexibility.

“With deep appreciation, Toyota will continue strengthening its production structure to enable a flexible response to future demand growth and market changes in India and surrounding regions and to deliver products in a timely manner that customers choose,” the company said in a statement.

Toyota added that the plant will be positioned to supply vehicles not only to domestic customers but also to customers in surrounding markets, indicating a focus on exports as part of the strategy.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor currently operates two manufacturing plants at Bidadi near Bengaluru. The first plant, established in 1997 with production starting in 1999, manufactures models such as Innova HyCross, Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Legender, with an installed capacity of up to 1,32,000 units annually.

The second plant began production in December 2010 and manufactures the Camry Hybrid, Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Hilux, with an installed capacity of up to 2,10,000 units.

Together, Toyota’s installed production capacity in India stands at up to 3,42,000 units per year.
