Tata Motors is set to roll out the first vehicle from its greenfield manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu’s Ranipet district in the first half of February, marking a key milestone for the company’s domestic manufacturing and localisation plans, reported Deccan Herald.

Sources told the publication that the first model to come off the assembly line will be the Range Rover Evoque, a compact luxury SUV from the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) portfolio, priced from around ₹65 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. The first vehicle is expected to be rolled out on February 9, less than 16 months after the foundation stone for the facility was laid.

Spread across 470 acres at Panapakkam in Ranipet district, the plant will manufacture vehicles from both the Tata Motors and JLR portfolios. The company will initially begin with Completely Knocked Down (CKD) assembly operations, with additional models to be introduced in phases. The facility is expected to take around seven years to become fully operational, sources said.

Make in India for the World
Tata Motors is investing around ₹9,000 crore in the plant, which is planned to have an annual production capacity of over 2.5 lakh vehicles over the next five to seven years. The facility will produce both conventional and electric vehicles for domestic and export markets. It is Tata Motors’ second manufacturing unit in South India after its Dharwad plant in Karnataka.

The inauguration of the plant is seen as a boost to the ‘Make in India for the World’ programme, enabling local manufacturing of JLR vehicles that are currently assembled at Tata Motors’ Pune facility.

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin are expected to attend the rollout event. The rapid commissioning of the plant further reinforces Tamil Nadu’s position as a major automotive manufacturing hub, home to several global carmakers and new EV investments.
