Mercedes-Benz will begin the India leg of its global “140 Years. 140 Places.” drive in July, as part of a transcontinental journey marking 140 years since Carl Benz filed the patent for the first automobile in 1886.

The India route will feature three Mercedes-Benz S-Class saloons that are travelling across six continents and more than 55 countries, covering over 60,000 kilometres and visiting 140 locations worldwide. The company said the initiative marks the anniversary of the invention of the automobile and aims to document places, people and cultures across different markets.

Three S-Class cars to travel across India

The India leg will see the three S-Class cars, named Gotlieb, Carl and Bertha, travel through destinations including Delhi, Amritsar, Jammu, Ladakh, Lucknow, Varanasi, Patna, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Ahmedabad, Pune, Mumbai, Hampi, Bengaluru, Goa and Coorg. The route also includes Bhutan, the only international leg of the India journey.

Mercedes-Benz said the drive will document India’s landscapes, cultural heritage, architecture and craftsmanship through two routes. One route will take the Gotlieb car through northern India and the Himalayas, including Umling La and mountain passes around Manali, before continuing through the Gangetic plains and Bhutan. Carl and Bertha will travel through western and southern India before concluding in Mumbai.

“Mercedes-Benz’s much awaited ‘140 Years. 140 Places.’ world tour is coming to India, celebrating the Three-Pointed Star’s 140 years global legacy of innovation and progress. In India, this world tour aims at capturing the rich cultural tapestry, awe-inspiring architecture, the unique geographical diversities and the unmatched energy and spirit of our customers, who define Mercedes-Benz’s legacy,” said Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India.

“India is the famed land of tradition and cultural heritage, as much it is for technological innovation and rapid progress – qualities that strongly resemble S-Class’ own distinguished journey over the decades. We are proud to host ‘140 Years. 140 Places’ global journey in India, narrated through our flagship S-Class,” he added.
According to the company, the global drive will continue until October and is intended to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the first automobile patent while highlighting Mercedes-Benz’s presence across international markets.
